What Is OPC Drum? The Heart of Laser Printing Working Principle

What It Is: The "Heart" of Laser Printing
Laser printing is essentially an electrostatic imaging process. The drum (also called the photoreceptor or OPC drum) is coated with a photoconductive material — originally selenium, now mostly Organic Photoconductor (OPC) — that acts as an insulator in darkness and a conductor when exposed to light. The cycle works as follows:

1.Charging: A charge roller applies a uniform negative charge across the drum surface.

2.Exposure: A laser beam scans the drum according to the image data. Exposed areas lose their charge, forming an "electrostatic latent image."

3.Developing: Negatively charged toner particles are attracted to the exposed (higher-potential) areas on the drum.

4.Transfer: Paper passes beneath the drum, and a transfer roller applies a positive charge, pulling the toner onto the paper.

5.Fusing: Heated rollers melt and press the toner into the paper fibers, fixing the image.

6.Cleaning & Erasing: A blade removes residual toner, and an erase lamp neutralizes any remaining charge, readying the drum for the next cycle.
